DISCRIMINATION DESTROYS Your Living Standard

Gregg Shotwell is a machine operator, a member of UAW local 2151, an activist and writer, whose comments on labor issues can be found in many on-line magazines throughout the web, as well as at his own sites Live Bait and Ammo and In the Crosshairs.
Two Tiers: A Symptom of Social Decadence.
SF General Strike '34.jpgThe two tier wage scheme is a blatant act of discrimination against an entire class of people, namely, the next generation.
Discrimination against young people is not a viable economic solution, it's a symptom of social decadence; intellectually unsound and ethically malignant.
A society that degrades workers is self destructive, not competitive. If sacrifices are necessary, they should be shared equally by all classes and all generations. Unequal treatment isn't an astute business plan; it's shortsighted, unprofessional, and catastrophically perverse.
Two tier wage agreements negotiated by the UAW makes the union partners in the business of exploiting workers. Degrading new union members to protect older members from any sacrifice is fundamentally anti union. Equal pay for equal work is not an abstract hypothetical concept; it's the foundation of solidarity. The UAW's participation in this wage discrimination is morally repugnant to any genuine unionist. Two tier contracts aren't temporary concessions; they are prepaid funeral arrangements for the labor movement.

The parrots of the status quo insist
1.      there is no alternative to an economic system that degrades workers,
2.      deprives the unfortunate of health care,
3.      threatens the security of the elderly,
4.      and desecrates the environment.
5.      It's a lie. For the strong there is always an alternative.
THE TRUTH IS THIS:
·        Balanced trade makes sense.
·        Full employment is a workable reality.
·        A living wage is simple justice.
·        Self sufficiency in energy, agriculture, and manufacturing is National Security.
The Federal Reserve Board's policy of maintaining an army of unemployed workers to curb inflation by holding down wages is impractical and cruel. We don't need to persecute the poor to secure the fortunate, anymore than we need to spread disease to find a cure.
Why heed the convoluted gibberish of Alan Greenspan or the high salaried hacks in the health insurance rackets? They defy common sense.
·        Social Security isn't broke, it's pilfered.
·        Health care in America is a circus of reverse risks. The audience walks tightropes while clowns roll up the nets.
·        Medicare for all isn't unattainable; it's the norm in every modern nation except the
·        US. Declaring our economy sound while 45 million citizens lack health insurance, eight million are unemployed, and the mentally ill are prescribed homelessness for a treatment plan isn't hubris, its nonsense.
A nation's prosperity depends on a system of just rewards, not the degradation of the working class.

EDITORIAL: Silencing the citizen soldier
Justice foot-dragging disenfranchises the military

By THE WASHINGTON TIMES

7:14 p.m., Thursday, August 12, 2010

Military voting rights still aren't protected. That's the message from former Justice Department official M. Eric Eversole, who argues in a column at the front of this section that his former employer is undermining the new law requiring states to mail ballots to military voters at least 45 days before the November elections. If anything, the situation might be even worse than Mr. Eversole suggests.

The Obama administration refuses to release the waiver requests filed by a dozen states and territories claiming an inability to meet the legal deadline. Mr. Eversole and 17 members of Congress led by Rep. Robert E. Latta, Ohio Republican, sought this information through formal requests.

One of the states requesting a waiver, Colorado, held its primary three days ago - a whopping 84 days ahead of the November election. It defies belief that the Centennial State would claim that it doesn't have enough time to mail ballots to military voters by the law's deadline of Sept. 18. Colorado Secretary of State Bernie Buescher, a Democrat, insists that he is unable to comply, and his spokesman Rich Coolidge admitted that some military votes won't get counted as a result. Mr. Buescher did post online the letter he sent with the waiver request, in which he claimed compliance would be "extremely difficult" in light of the state's Sept. 3 date for "ballot certification."

That leaves 15 days after certification to print and mail the ballots. With all the modern technology available, it's hardly credible that this is something that cannot be made to happen. Other states that are dragging their feet and demanding waivers include Washington state, where the primary is Aug. 17, and Alaska, where the primary is Aug. 24. Again, these dates are well ahead of the legal deadline.

In the eight states where primaries are not held until Sept. 14, the waiver requests make some sense. Nonetheless, the law requires that these jurisdictions find some other way to guarantee that military votes can be cast and counted on time and that they detail how this will be accomplished despite missing the 45-day deadline. The public has a right to see and evaluate all such plans.

The lack of transparency on this issue makes it difficult to know whether the Justice Department takes seriously the right of military personnel serving overseas to have a say in the way our government is run. Those who risk their lives on behalf of this country should not be disenfranchised because the administration refuses to do its job.

The 10 People You Need in Your Professional Network
Want to get ahead? Getting these people into your network is key.
by Tai Goodwin, Forbes.com

It is important to know the two Q's as you build out your network: quality and quantity. But have you considered the importance of having a well-rounded network?

In this job market, having a strong network is critical to your professional survival. There are plenty of tips and articles on where to find people, how and when to connect to them, and even what you need to say to attract and maintain your network. This article focuses on who should be in your network.

Here are the top 10 people that should be in your network:

1. The Mentor: This is the person who has reached the level of success you aspire to have. You can learn from their success as well as their mistakes. Heed their wisdom and experience. This relationship offers a unique perspective because they have known you through several peaks and valleys in your life and watched you evolve.

2. The Coach: The coach is someone who comes in at different times in your life. They help with critical decisions and transitions and offer an objective perspective with no strings attached.

3. The Industry Insider: This is someone in your chosen field who has expert-level information or access to it. This person will keep you informed of what's happening now and what the next big thing is. Invite them to be a sounding board for your next innovative idea.

4. The Trendsetter: This is someone outside of your chosen industry who always has the latest buzz. It can be on any topic that you find interesting. The goal in having this person in your network is to look for those connections that spark innovation via the unconventional. It will also help you keep your conversations interesting.

5. The Connector: This is a person who has access to people, resources, and information. As soon as they come across something related to you, they are sending you an email or picking up the phone. Connectors are great at uncovering unique ways to make connections, finding resources and opportunities that most people would overlook.

6. The Idealist: This is the person in your network you can dream with. No matter how "out there" your latest idea is, this is the person who will help you brainstorm ways to make it happen. Without judgment, they are focused on helping you flesh out your dreams in high definition, even if you don't have a solid plan yet on how to make it happen.

7. The Realist: On the flip side, you still need the person who will help you keep it real. This is the person who will give you the raised eyebrow when your expectations exceed your effort. These are not people who knock down your dreams; rather, they challenge you to actively make your dream happen.

8. The Visionary: Visionary people inspire you by their journey. They are similar to the Idealist, but the visionary can help you envision an actual plan to reach your goal. One personal encounter with this type of person can powerfully change the direction of your thinking and life.

9. The Partner: You need to have someone who is in a similar place and on a similar path to share with. In fact, partners do a lot of sharing. This is a person you can share the wins and woes with. Partners will also share resources, opportunities, and information.

10. The Wanna-Be: This is someone you can serve as mentor to. Someone you can help shape and guide based on your experiences. One of the best ways to tell that you understand something is to be able to explain it to someone else. And sometimes, one of the best motivators for pushing through obstacles and hardship is knowing that someone is watching.

Obviously you will want to have more than 10 people in your network. The trick is to make sure you are building a diverse network by adding people from different industries, backgrounds, age groups, ethnic groups, and so on that fit into the roles listed above. Building a deep network by only including people from your current profession or business focus leaves too many stones unturned, limiting potential opportunities.

Serious about building a strong professional network that can actually provide the leverage you need to make progress at work or in your business? Evaluate your current network and get started filling in the gaps.

(Breaking News- Honda agreed this week June 7th,to a 25 % raise accross the board. Now you can earn MORE THAN $200 PER MONTH building Hondas in China. Whoopee for Honda!)

A strike at a Honda parts factory in southern China seemed to be partially over on Monday.

The dispute over wages began last week and halted production at the carmaker’s four assembly plants in China.

Honda said “a majority” of the 1,900 workers had accepted a 24 percent pay rise and returned to work making transmissions, but some are continuing the strike.

One woman said: “In the factory, if you work overtime, your salary would usually be higher, but we rarely get overtime. And our salary is very low. I’ve been working here for two years. My basic wage is still 700 yuan (83 euros) and altogether I get 1,200 yuan (142 euros).”

Some strikers accused union officials of pressuring them to return to work and even manhandling them.

The Communist Party-backed All China Federation of Labour Unions discourages independent worker activism, and generally sides with management.

China, the fastest growing economy in the world, has been hit with a string of labour disputes at foreign firms, where workers have begun to demand better pay and working conditions.

they impose most of the sacrifices on low to middle income workers.

1.) Elsewhere across the country, shops remained closed for the day while hospitals operated with emergency staff as doctors joined the walkout."The Greek people do not owe anything to anyone. It is those individuals who have stolen public money and pension funds that should be made to pay up," said Left Coalition leader Alexis Tsipras.

2.) Union leaders claim Greece is being asked to scrap salary bonuses that are worth two months' wages,
3.) impose a three-year pay freeze,
4.) raise the value added tax from 21 to 23 per cent,
5.) increase the retirement age from 62 to 67,
6.) as well as a public sector hiring freeze.
7.The government has already carried out three sets of austerity measures including tax hikes and pension freezes over the last six months.

Prime Minister George Papandreou said Friday painful cuts were "necessary for our country's protection, for our future, for us to be able to stand on our feet."Athens insists it needs help by May 19, the day it is expected to issue a 9-billion-euro bond issue to refinance its debt, in order to avoid a default that could spread to other eurozone countries with immediate deficit crises, such as Portugal and Spain.

But unions, already reeling from austere budget cuts, have called a new round of strikes on May 5 to protest against cuts foreseen for 2011 and 2012,
saying they impose most of the sacrifices on low to middle income workers.
The public sector union ADEDY, which represents half a million workers,
  • has also called a 4-hour strike for Tuesday,
  • on top of a nationwide strike already decided for Wednesday. Greek authorities aim to achieve 24 billion euros of spending cuts, lowering the deficit by 10 percentage points, currently standing at almost 14 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).That is almost five times the 3 per cent level foreseen by eurozone rules, which are regularly flouted by its members. The spiralling crisis, which saw the euro fall against the dollar amid credit rating downgrades for Greece, Portugal and Spain - led Germany to finally bow this week to international pressure to speed up the rescue operation.Berlin initially held a tough stance, especially since bailing out profligate Greeks is unpopular amongst German voters and may hurt Merkel's centre-right coalition's chances in the May 9 state election in North Rhine-Westphalia.Greece has been guilty of its free-spending ways for decades, running up debt equal to 115 per cent of GDP.
  • The country suffered another blow on Friday after credit agency Moody's Investor Services downgraded the debt rating of nine Greek banks.
  • It also said the banks' might face further downgrades in the future.

Super Rich Made $345 Million Each in 2007 as Their Tax Rates Plummeted

Subj: Tax Rates For The Rich

Super Rich Made $345 Million Each in 2007 as Their Tax Rates Plummeted

By SAM GUSTIN

Posted 8:15 PM 02/17/10 Economy

The 400 wealthiest Americans have seen their annual incomes skyrocket over the last two decades while their tax rates have decreased dramatically, according to newly released data from the Internal Revenue Service. In fact, between 1992 to 2007, the annual incomes of this tiny club of über-rich increased seven-fold to a whopping $345 million on average, while their effective tax rate dropped by more than one-third from a 1995 peak of nearly 30%, the data shows.

The new IRS data, which represents further evidence of the growing chasm between the super-wealthy and the rest of taxpayers, was first reported by David Cay Johnston, a tax expert and Pulitzer-Prize winning former reporter for The New York Times, in an article for TaxAnalysts.

"This just-disclosed data shows that government policy is concentrating incomes at the very top and steadily lowering their tax burden, thus shifting it on to Americans
who in a lifetime don't make what these people make in a week," Johnston told DailyFinance.

For Super-Rich, Incomes Go Up, Tax Rates Go Down

Chuck Marr, director of federal tax policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, told Bloomberg that the new data highlights "two long-term trends: That income at the very top has exploded and their taxes have been cut dramatically."

Between 1992 to 2007, the last year included in the data, the income of the 400 richest Americans rose
637% to the average $345 million mark. During that same period, their effective tax rate declined by over one-third, from a peak tax rate of nearly 30% to 16.6%. Meanwhile, their share of all adjusted gross income increased from 0.52% to 1.59% over that same period. In other words, in a nation of over 300 million people, the 400 richest Americans accounted for nearly 1.6% of all income earned in 2007.

Bill Ahern of the Tax Foundation, which pushes for lower taxes, said the 2007 data -- taken during the final year of the last boom -- doesn't accurately gauge the situation in 2010, nearly two years into a crippling recession. "In a good year like 2007, it's not surprising to see that the owners and managers of the nation's largest firms made a fortune," Ahern told Bloomberg. "Notice that two-thirds of their 2007 income was in capital gains, which have dropped like a rock since then."

But Johnston says the new data belie recent reports that the super-rich have become "poorer." Johnston says their incomes have likely decreased since 2007 thanks to the financial crisis and recession. But he disputes that these people, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, have become "poorer."

Clinton, Bush Tax Cuts For The Wealthy

Just 15 years ago, the 400 richest Americans earned an average of just over $50 million and had an effective tax rate of about 30%. So while the incomes of the 400 richest have increased by seven-fold over that period, their effective tax rate has been cut by over one-third.

Johnston said decreasing share of taxes paid by the ultra-rich has been driven by government polices that are concentrating wealth at the very top of the income scale. Dating back to the administration of Bill Clinton, Congress has
lowered tax rates

on the extremely wealthy
several times.

"Bill Clinton cut these people's tax rates 8% and Bush added another 5.5% decrease," Johnston said. Most of the income increases for the super-rich came from cuts in the capital gains tax, he said. Prior to the tax cuts put in place by former President George W. Bush, the tax rate for top 400 was about 22%. Since those tax cuts, their rate to 16.6% in 2007.

Capital gains -- profits made from investments -- represented "66.3% of 2007 income for the top 400, up from 62.8% in 2006 and 36.1% in 1992," Johnston reported. Since 1992, "the bottom 90% of Americans have seen their incomes rise by 13% in 2009 dollars, compared with an increase of 399% for the top 400."

"The annual top 400 report was first made public by the Clinton administration, but the George W. Bush administration shut down access to the report," Johnston wrote. "Its release was resumed a year ago when President Obama took office."

BBC News - Study hints at dark matter action: "Study hints at dark matter action
By Doreen Walton
Science reporter, BBC News

dark matter simulation
Some scientists believe dark matter (in pink) is everywhere in the universe

Researchers in the US say they have detected two signals which could possibly indicate the presence of particles of dark matter.

But the study in Science journal reports the statistical likelihood of a detection of dark matter as 23%.

Deep underground in a lab in Minnesota experiments to detect WIMPS, or Weakly Interacting Massive Particles have been going on since 2003.

Scientists are currently developing an even more sensitive experiment.

'It's a very difficult situation,' said Professor Jodi Cooley from Southern Methodist University, Dallas in the US, who led the research.

'In some ways I feel we've been very unlucky.

It's a very exciting time in the field
Professor Jodi Cooley, Southern Methodist University

'Either we had a statistical fluctuation in our background or it could be that these two events are evidence of dark matter but there weren't enough of them to be sure.

'We can't rule them out as being a signal but we can't conclude that they are a signal.'

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS), an experiment designed to detect the dark matter particles, is a joint effort by several US universities and institutes.

The scientists describe dark matter as being 'the gravitational scaffolding that caused normal matter to coalesce into the galaxies we see today'.

Ordinary matter - gas, stars, planets and galaxies - is thought to make up less than 5% of the Universe. The rest of the cosmos is unseen, 70% is thought to be 'dark energy' and of this 25% of this is believed to be dark matter.

Different theories

Some scientists believe dark matter is made up of WIMP subatomic particles.

These are thought to have a similar mass to the nuclei that give each atom the majority of its mass, but are predicted to 'bounce off' rather than interact with any other matter.

This would make the particles themselves impossible to find. So the detectors in the CDMS experiment are designed to pick up the tiny amount of energy that Wimps leave behind as they scatter - the only clue that might remain.

Other scientists argue that that the dark substance consists of everyday matter, but that this ordinary matter, referred to as Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects (Machos), happens to radiate little or no light.

Professor Cooley hopes that the new experiment that's being developed will speed up the process of looking for evidence of dark matter.

'It's a very exciting time in the field,' she added."
